Science-National-CurriculumScience-Curriculum-Overview

At Charlbury Primary School, we aim to encourage children’s natural curiosity for the world around them.  We encourage children to build upon their scientific knowledge and understanding by asking questions, and developing investigations and explorations in order to answer these questions.  Where possible, science lessons are linked to other curriculum areas, children’s interests, and the expertise and opportunities for discovery available in our local community and further afield.

By the end of each phase, we expect children to have met the objectives set out in the National Curriculum: these are referenced through our Science KSV's map.

At Charlbury Primary School, the children develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, in accordance with the requirements of the national curriculum.  These are taught from a balance of knowledge-based lessons, investigations, and activities in which children can develop their skills as scientists.  Children are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, and provided with opportunities to engage in discussion, debate, and use scientific vocabulary.

Children also participate in enrichment opportunities, science weeks, educational visits and visitors to the school in order to develop children’s science capital.  Children develop the understanding that science and scientists can be found in a multitude of environments, and hail from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Children’s achievements and development as scientists are assessed by teachers using a variety of methods, including work completed during lessons, participation in discussion activities, observations of children undertaking practical work, and end of topic quizzes.

At Charlbury Primary School, we aim to create an environment in which questions are welcomed and that scientific vocabulary is used confidently by all.  Children build on their scientific knowledge by implementing it in a variety of contexts, including teacher and child-led investigations, the creation of products, and the exploration of areas of particular interest.  The development of children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills ensures that children are ready for the next stage in their educational journey.
