The Curriculum

The Curriculum

At Charlbury we follow the National Curriculum. This document identifies the key knowledge and skills that every child should start secondary school with. We are always looking to improve our curriculum to ensure that it is both engaging and memorable for every child. Below you will find some more details on subject content.

Phonics

We teach children to read using the Letters and Sounds phonics program. A parent guide to phonics can be found here. A link to the Letters and sounds Youtube channel can be found here. This is a great resource for parents helping children with their phonics at home.

Maths

At Charlbury, we teach maths for mastery. This approach is based on that used in Asian nations such as Singapore, where the students do incredibly well in maths! Here are some core elements of our approach:

  • EVERYONE LEARNS TOGETHER AND SUCCEEDS TOGETHER

  • THERE IS TIME TO THINK DEEPLY ABOUT MATHS

  • CONCRETE AND PICTORIAL SUPPORT

  • TOPICS LAST LONGER

  • DEVELOPMENT OF BASIC FACT KNOWLEDGE AND MATHS FLUENCY

If you would like to find out more information about maths, please contact Mrs Davids through the school office.

Music

Music is a very important part of Charlbury Primary School. We pride ourselves on our music provision and have a skilled teacher in Mrs Grierson who works with each class on a rotation through the school year. In addition to this, our Year 4 children learn to play brass instruments through the OCC music service and have several tutors available for lessons privately or through OCC.
